For most of us, turkeys are just a Christmas thing, but not for John Malseed. He lives and breathes all things turkey, every day of the year.

The Malseed family have been farming their traditional Dartmoor hill farm, Frenchbeer Farm, for more than 30 years. Nestled in the heart of the Dartmoor National Park near Chagford, this 1200 acre farm encompasses open moorland and upland hills. Life on a hill farm is no easy task, exposed to all the weather that the Dartmoor seasons can throw at it, but the farm is a true labour of love. The farm may be exposed to the elements, but it is also surrounded by breathtaking views in one of the most beautiful parts of Devon. 

Here John rears hardy cattles and sheep - varieties that thrive in the elements - alongside his award-winning heritage breed turkeys. The turkeys began as a side project, but proved so popular that the flock has grown over the years to become the star of the show.

The Frenchbeer turkeys enjoy a free range lifestyle that few turkey producers can match. The farm operates with full organic certification, and from the moment they hatch, these turkeys get the full organic treatment: they roam freely across the rolling fields of Dartmoor, foraging in their natural environment, with access to shelter whenever they choose and allowed to grow at a natural pace.

The Malseeds even grow their own organic oats and use them to supplement the turkeys' diet, alongside their organic feed. By the time the Christmas season is upon us, their turkeys are fully mature and have the traditional ‘finish’ of fat that makes them so exceptional.

As the holidays approach, the farm gets even busier. The turkeys are hand-plucked, hung for flavour and finished on-site. It’s an ‘all hands on deck’ family affair which guarantees the quality of these award-winning birds. .
